Why and How to Use Filters With Layer Mask in Photoshop

Image
Layer masks are one of building blocks of Photoshop. Layer masks are nothing else but pixel based layers with two main colors: black and white and shades of gray in between them. It is easy to create and modify layer mask using selection or painting tools. One of the options to modify layer mask is lesser known among Photoshop users: using filters from Filter menu. Yeah, using filters! It won't work with each and every filter from Filter menu but some of them can help you to achieve cool, interesting and non-destructive effects. Why Use Filters on Layer Mask? How to Use Remove White/Black Matte in Photoshop

Image
In this tip I will explain to you why and how to use commands: Remove White Matte and Remove Black Matte from Photoshop's  Layers > Matte menu. Usually, you will use those commands after removing background around the object. Why use Remove White/Black Matte You should use those commands to remove annoying edge halos around extracted object. You know that tiny white or black edge (border) around your nicely extracted object? You can automate removal with a single click. Requirement to use Remove White/Black Matte Commands that I am talking about lives in Layer > Matte > Remove White/Black Matte . Both commands are available only with the pixel based layer selected. You can not use those commands with layer mask selected. Sub-menu from Layer > Matte will be grayed out when a layer mask is selected in the Layers panel. Remove tiny black or white edge around extracted object The first step is to select the pixel based layer in the Layers panel. usua
