Custom Zoom Value in Photoshop

Custom Zoom Value in Photoshop

Many times you will want to see your images with different zoom level. Sometimes you will want to see your image at exact zoom level, which may appear difficult to match using common tolls and keyboard shortcuts. It is actually very simple, quick and easy. In this quick tip I will explain you how to zoom at any zoom level that you want to see your image.

Photoshop Plus

Zooming at any level (percentage)

In the lower left corner in Photoshop you can see current zoom level of your images. The value will change instantly as you are using Zoom Tool, common keyboard shortcuts or scroll wheel.

In case that you want to see your image at let's say 50%, then you can simply double click on the current value to select it.
select zoom level
The very first step to use custom zoom value is to double click on current value in the lower left corner to select it.

The next step is to type number and to press Enter/Return.
confirm with enter
After selecting current value you can type custom value using your keyboard. Confirm change with Enter/Return to see your image at custom zoom value (percentage).

Zoom and keep selected

Now what if you want to see your image at a couple of different percentages one after another? There is trick to keep the selected percentage number and to see your image at that percentage in the same time. Since the percentage number is still selected you can retype it instantly and change the zoom level. Here is how to:

  1. Select zoom percentage by double clicking on it. There is no special requirement for this operation, any tool can be activated.
  2. Type desired percentage.
  3. Press Shift + Enter/Return on your keyboard.

zoom and keep selected
To enter custom zoom value and to keep it selected so you can retype it and see your image with some other custom value do the following: 1) Select current value by double clicking on it. 2) Type custom value. 3) Press Shift + Enter/Return to apply custom zoom value to your image and to keep value selected so you can retype it.

Woah! You see your image at desired percentage (zoom level) and number is selected, what means you can retype it instantly without repeating double click over and over to select it. I call this method: zoom and keep selected, by the way.

Use keyboard to change the zoom level

Here is another tip: you can use arrow keys to change the zoom level. While zoom percentage is selected press up/down arrow keys to change zoom percentage for a 1% increment. Hold down the Shift key while pressing up/down arrow keys to change zoom percentage for a 10% increment.

Beside that you can type value after selecting it, there is and option to change value using keyboard. Use up/down arrow keys to change value for a 1% increment. Hold down Shift and press up/down arrow key to change value for a 10% increment.

Play around and memorize

You can continue changing value and pressing Shift + Enter/Return as many times as you want. Have a fun, play around with new trick you just learned and it will remain somewhere in your memory to access it when you need it. That's how you learn that part of Photoshop and any other software: by repeating things which must be learned by hard. Repeating is mother of knowledge, do not forget that!
