Easy Way to Create an eCommerce Site With WordPress (Part 2)
We are going to continue exploring the easiest way to create an eCommerce site using WordPress. So far you should have installed WordPress on your local computer using Bitnami stack what is covered in the first part of this tutorial. In this post I will give you instructions how to install free eCommerce plugin WooCommerce. Along the way I will give you tips which additional plugins you can install and provide you with links to check and some premium themes for WooComerce.
Why to choose WooCommerceI will explain you my thoughts and conclusions on why you should choose WooCommerce and WordPress. First of all, your online store should (read: must) have a blog or news section. There isn't better and more powerful blogging platform. In the matter of fact, most eCommerce solutions, by default, does not take in account blog at all. Huge mistake in my opinion. The second reason is ease of use, number of solutions like themes, plugins and developers who can help you in case something goes wrong or you cannot figure out on your own.
When it comes to online store, then WooCommerce is a solution that I want to recommend you because it does have everything that you need to sell digital or tangible goods and it's free. There are lots of free and paid plugins and themes which you can use to build an online store. Another thing to take in account is that their core developers stay behind many plugins so you can rely on the best available solution. Do not forget that you can get an expert to customize your them through Affiliated Woo Workers.
Premium themes and drag and drop page builders
There are and many premium WooCommerce themes like Flatsome, Porto and Shopkeeper. Another thing worth to know is that you can use Visual Composer: Page Builder for WordPress with their free themes: Storefront, Boutique or any other WordPress theme. Let me give you information and link to Ultimate Addons for Visual Composer.
Install WooCommerceAfter installing WordPress just navigate to Plugins > Add New. Type woocommerce in the search bar and click on Install Now button when WooCommerce - excelling eCommerce plugin appear.
After application finish downloading and installation process, click on Activate Plugin to finish the process.
Install Storefront themeThe very first thing after installing WooCommerce is to install Storefront theme. Click on Appearance > Themes > Add New then type: storefront. Click on Install button and wait a couple of seconds, then click on Activate.
You are up and running. The very first thing to do is to visit WooCommerce > Settings tab.
Beside settings tab I will recommend you to visit and WooComerce > Add-ons tab and check recommended add-ons.
Another a must-do thing is to visit Appearance > Storefront and check suggested free and paid plugins and themes. Homepage Control is certainly a free plugin that you want to install. There are also free Storefront Product Sharing, Storefront Product Pagination and Storefront Footer Bar plugins which are a must have in my opinion.
Install sample product data
If you want just to try or play around with WooCommerce and you do not have actual product then use sample product data. You will need to install the WordPress importer from Tools > Import > WordPress. By the way, every product is custom post type if you are looking for further explanation.
Click on Activate Plugin & Run Importer on the next screen then click on Browse button. File dummy-data.xml is in \apps\wordpress\htdocs\wp-content\plugins\woocommerce\dummy-data. So navigate to dummy-data.xml, select it and click Open. The next step is to click on Upload file and import button.
One more thing to do is to assign posts to a user (someone is always behind any post). You can type a user name or simply select existing user (probably only your name will be listed) from drop-down list. Check and Download and import file attachments and click Submit button.
When you finish importing data go and check your Shop page.
To be continuedThat's it for this post. I will continue giving you tips, recommend you plugins, themes and so on. Stay tuned, hopefully you will find this solution useful as I did.
