In several next posts I will guide you through the process of creating modern, full featured eCommerce site using WordPress, probably most popular content management system (CMS). The only thing that is required to follow along with me is the knowledge on how to run the installer and common things like typing in visual editor and applying formatting. We will create an eCommerce site, but that's not ultimate requirement to get something from my posts, you can create corporate site, one page portfolio or simple blog.
Install WordPress on a local computer using BitnamiWhen getting started it is a good idea to install files on local computer. There are several options to run WordPress on the local computer: MAMP, WAMP, Bitnami and WebMatrix. I am using Bitnami installation files (stack) on Windows computer and that's what I want to recommend you, at least for Win users. Supported platforms: Operating Systems Windows, OS X and all flavors of Linux, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, Amazon Linux, Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian and more.
Everything is easy as installing any other program and everything works just fine. You can learn more about Bitnami from here.
How to get Bitnami stackFirst things first. What is Bitnami stack?
The Bitnami WordPress Stack provides a one-click install solution for WordPress. Download installers and virtual machines, or run your own WordPress server in the cloud.
In short, it is the only installation file that you need to run and install. It will do everything for you in the background and you do not need to know anything about WordPress and how things work. However, if you are lynda.com subscriber, I will recommend you to follow Morten Rand-Hendriksen and watch his courses: Installing and Running WordPress, WordPress Essential Training, WordPress Ecommerce: Core Concepts, WordPress Ecommerce: WooCommerce, WordPress Ecommerce: Easy Digital Downloads and many other courses that this excellent and skilled instructor have recorded.
To download Bitnami stack go to Bitnami > Applications and click on WordPress icon.
The next thing to do is to click on Installers tab(1), then select your platform(2).
Click on Download button and wait for files to be downloaded on your computer.
Install WordPressOnce you have Bitnami installation files it is easy to install them: just double click on the icon and follow simple instructions.
Believe it or not, that's it! Now you have WordPress and all required files installed on your computer.
Run WordPressTo start using the WordPress interface where you have options to change the theme, to download plugins, create menus, pages and so on... You need to open any browser and to type, for example: http://localhost:8080/wordpress/wp-admin/. Note: 8080 is Apache Web Server Port that I have configured because port 80 was already in use.
That's it, you are up and running.
