Anti-aliasing in Photoshop

Image
Anti-aliasing is something that you are using all the time, even if you do not know what exactly it is. In this tutorial which is part of: how things works series, we will cover what is anti-aliasing and why you need it. What is actually anti-aliasing? The base is that computer screen is actually a grid of squares (pixels) which can be filled with one color. One pixel can be filled with one color only, it cannot be divided into smaller unit. The pixel is smallest unit and cannot be divided, remember that. In case you have a rectangle or square which is aligned to the pixel grid, everything will work just fine (edge or path exactly matches pixel grid, in other words). The problem is that shapes can have curved lines (every letter you can type is the shape by the way). It is not possible to present smooth curved lines using square pixels and edges in that case will appear jagged. That's when anti-aliasing comes in place and use. Simply putting, anti-aliasing is calcul

Let's Talk About Selections in Photoshop

Image
In this post we will cover one of the most popular topics: selections. You should be up and running after reading this tutorial even if you do not have lots of experience with selections in Photoshop. The secret formula is to understand what are digital images in the first place, to observe a bit existing images and what your camera is sending to Photoshop, how selections are made and to be able to define the problem when it occurs. I will guide you through several steps to get logical conclusions based on the facts and to understand what is your part in the process of making selection, what is Photoshop's side part and how things works . What are digital images and what your camera is sending to Photoshop The first thing you should know is that digital images are, basically digits or numbers. Your JPG file stored on your hard drive does not have any color or square pixels stored inside, there are only digits. As you probably already know, all colors on your screen are crea

Smart Previews in Lightroom 5

Image
Smart Previews are a great new feature introduced in Lightroom 5. With smart previews you can save disc space, work with files while your external drive is disconnected or have a problem with cable, as in my case. There are a couple of ways to generate smart previews and Julieanne Kost have covered this topic very well in a video tutorial on Lightroom Help pages . What are actually Smart Previews? I will copy and paste the definition from Lightroom Help which is describing features of Smart Previews: Smart Previews allow you to edit images that are not physically connected to your computer. Smart Preview files are a new lightweight, smaller, file format, based on the lossy DNG file format introduced in Lightroom 4. In essence, Lightroom will create new files and save them in the DNG file format. Files will be 2560px (or smaller) on a long side. How to create Smart Previews after importing photos I will explain you how to generate previews when you have photos importe
