The good news is that Erik has a portfolio and he is not keeping as mystery how the deed is done. In fact Erik is providing short videos which are usually named: Behind the scenes and I want to recommend you to visit his portfolio and blog where you can get inspired but also and informed about the process behind the scene. Not surprisingly, everything usually starts with an idea and sketch on paper which are later translated into fantastic photo manipulations.

Open As Smart Object Command in Photoshop CC 2014

Open as Smart Object command is located in the File menu. It is the fifth command from the top and I can bet that many of you know for this command but at the same time I must say that I do not know many users who are actually using this command which can be very useful and time saver.

What is useful with Open as Smart Object command This command will open whatever file is selected as a Smart Object layer. It is easy to guess. You can also open PNG or GIF file directly as a Smart Object layer and apply any of the filters or plugins which works with Smart Object layers. You will have embedded Smart Object layer if that's your question.

When we are using filters in Photoshop, then we are usually converting layers or range of layers to Smart Object because we want flexibility, right? Another thing to consider is that you can not just open layered file and apply filter (in most cases). You want first to stamp layers and perhaps to convert stamped or merged layer to a Smart Object. Ano…

Photoshop Actions Mini Course - Creating Puzzle Effect (Part 2)

We will continue our journey with Photoshop actions. In this post we will continue with our action to automate creation of Puzzle Effect with each puzzle piece on its own layer.

What we have done and the next steps We have recorded 7 individual actions so far. The reason to record in this way is because it is much easier to test each action and also easy to drag steps into one single action when we ensure that everything works fine.

We are not jet done with steps so let's first record few additional steps before we assemble our final product.

Step 4 Layer Style
I will continue from previous tutorial where the last step was step number 3. We need to stylize our puzzle pieces. We are going to do that using Layer Effects: Bevel and Emboss and Outer Glow. I found that this 2 effects will work just fine.

Let's see what we have in our action. Run each of the 7 already recorded actions to check them one more time and to see where we are. You should see 6 pieces on separate layers and…
