Batch Rename Layers and Layer Groups in Photoshop CC
Adobe Generator is one of the cool new features in Photoshop CC. If you need more information, please visit this link. In this quick tip I will explain you how to quick batch rename layers and layer groups to prepare them for export using Generator. Fortunately, there is a quick and easy way to rename and revert to original layer and group names using free panels for Photoshop: Adobe Layer Namer and Layrs Control. Both extensions you can get for free from the new Adobe Add-ons site.
How to batch rename layers and groups using Adobe Layer NamerExtremely easy task: select layers or groups in the Layers panel, choose format by clicking on icon at the top of the Adobe Layer Namer panel (Window > Extensions > Adobe Layer Namer), set the quality for JPG or bit depth of PNG files and click Rename button. Done.
If you want to revert layer and group names, then select them, click on the file type icon and click Revert button in the Adobe Layer Namer panel.
Tip: if you want to rename each and every layer inside group then select all layers, otherwise only layer group will be renamed. In case you have stacked layer groups, to rename all layers inside all selected groups do the following: click on top most group in layers stack then Shift + click on last group. In case you want to rename only groups, then use Ctrl/Cmd + click to select groups.
How to batch rename layers and groups using Layrs ControlWhen using Layrs Control panel you will have more options including creating snapshot of the current state so you can easily revert or go back if something went wrong. It is pretty much same principle: select layers or groups in Layers panel then click on Layer Name Editor in Layrs panel (Window > Extensions > Layrs). Most of the time you will use: Use Selected Layers (default) option and Prefix or Suffix option. The Prefix will add in front of the layer/group name whatever you type in a Prefix text field while Suffix will add immediately after layer name.
Note: you must type .jpg6 or .png, .png8 for example (dot + extension + quality or bit depth) when using Suffix. When adding a scaling percentage or exact dimensions as Prefix, do not forget to type space bar after typing exact dimensions or scaling percentage.
There are and other useful options like mentioned Create Snapshot. Option Remove is there to remove first, last and range of characters. Insert option you can use to insert basically, characters at any position. You can also replace characters using Replace option.
Same thing and here for selection: if you want to rename all layers inside group then select them all. To rename all layers inside all selected groups do the following: click on top most group in layers stack then Shift + click on last group. In case you want to rename only groups, then use Ctrl/Cmd + click to select groups. To rename all layers in Layers panel just select any layer and use All Layers option in Layer Name Editor.
