When, Why and How to Align All Objects to Pixel Grid in Adobe Illustrator

By default when creating new document for Web in Adobe Illustrator option Align to Pixel Grid is checked what you can see in bottom Advanced portion of New Document window.
But this option is not default for all presets you may use as starting point. Lets say you did not pay attention on this option and you have bunch of objects not aligned to pixel grid but you want them aligned because final destination of file is Web.

Why to align objects to pixel grid
Reason to have objects aligned to pixel grid is because when converting artwork to square pixels for Web you may end up with some semi-transparent pixels at the edge of object or shape. If you are not aware of how things works here is quick explanation: one pixel can have only one color or one level of transparency at the time. All pixels are identical or with exact same size. Illustrator allows you to draw shape anywhere with any size what can result that shape boundary falls on middle of pixel for example.
Always pay attention and…

Search Keyboard Shortcuts in Adobe Illustrator CS6

Recently after installing Illustrator CS6, I have pressed for the thousand and first time keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + N to create new layer. It is shortcut for new layer in Photoshop and doesn’t work in Illustrator, actually it works but to create New (Document) From Template. Then I did good thing by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Alt + K to open Keyboard Shortcuts dialog where I was positively surprised! There is new search field to search shortcuts in Illustrator. Check it out! There is only one catch: by default Tools are selected in drop-down list above search field, so typing search term will search only tools. Change from drop-down list to Menu Commands then start typing menu command like new (layer, document, swatch) or whatever else, just start typing and you will get instant search result based on input. Not only that you can check and remind existing shortcuts for commands in menus, sub-menus and panels but you can also easily find command you are looking for and assign your…

When, Why and How to Crop Actual Pixels in Adobe Photoshop CS6

Photoshop CS6 has new redesigned and improved Crop tool with new features and I am very excited about that. In this tutorial I want to discuss one feature that is missing as in previous versions. That feature is to crop actual pixels with defined dimensions. I mean to set in advance desired dimensions like 480x360px and to crop without any pixel interpolation or resolution change.

Cropping pixels without interpolation
If you have question: what is wrong with interpolation? my answer is nothing, it works nice as everything else in Photoshop but… Interpolation means changing pixels (DIGITAL IMAGE INTERPOLATION). As you may know there is an option to set interpolation method when resampling images from the Image Size dialog, to set default interpolation method in Preferences dialog (Ctrl + K is the keyboard shortcut) and new in CS6 for Free Transform mode. When cropping images Crop Tool will use the interpolation method specified in the Preferences dialog. By the way new Photoshop CS6 ha…

Transforming Selections in Adobe Photoshop

Photoshop offers free transform and transformation options like Scale, Skew, Distort.. from Edit menu. Using this options you will affect selected area, actually pixels inside selected area. But you can also manipulate selection only, using exact same transformation options without to affect pixels inside the selection. This can be useful in many cases, including to select irregular object like egg for example. Or to add a cast shadow by creating and manipulating selection, then filling it with color.

How to access Transform Selection
To access this feature you need first to create selection, of course. Next step is to go to Select > Transform Selection. Another method is to right click and choose Transform selection. To use second method you must have active any of selection tools: Marquee, Lasso, Quick Selection

After entering transform selection you will have all transformation options: Skew, Distort, Perspective... available from Edit menu or on right click. You can also enter…

Use Any Shape (Path) as Frame in Adobe InDesign

In Adobe InDesign you can use any shape or path you can draw as frame don’t you know? If don’t, that’s because you never try it out. Draw any shape using standard shape tools, Pen or Pencil tool, select shape and go to File > Place or select Type tool and type text inside. That’s it, shape becomes frame and you can select and manipulate it and content inside frame in any way InDesign can offer.

Place Linked and Place-Embed Multiple Images in Adobe Illustrator

There are three ways to open raster image in Adobe Illustrator: to use Open or Place commands from File menu or to drag images from Adobe Bridge (you can also drag images from Desktop). When opening images through Open command, raster image will always be embedded, when placing through Place command you can choose to link or embed. When it comes to place multiple images then Adobe Bridge is your friend. Run it in Compact Mode (my preferred method), select multiple images and drag them into Illustrator file.

If images color profile does not much document profile you may see pop up window Paste Profile Mismatch where you can choose to Convert (preserve color appearance) or Don't convert (preserve color numbers). Adobe recommends to leave the document or imported color data as it is.

By default when you are dragging, images will be linked. Off course you can embed them anytime you want (select images and click Embed button in Options bar) but also to press Shift key while dragging, …
