Exploring Lightroom through Lightroom Presets

Photoshop Lightroom ships with many presets which can be great time savers but also they can be used to explore Lightroom capabilities and learn something from other users and professionals.

With Lightroom installation you have more than 50 default Presets to enhance images, convert them to B/W and so on. It is very easy to use them, just click on preset name in Develop module to apply it to the image. To explore how did is done or how effect or adjustment is created take a look at panels on the right hand side, when you are not sure which panel to expand, expand them all one by one and look for changes at sliders usually other then 0.

In this example I will use default Presets B&W Filter - Blue, Green, Red Filter. Click on B&W Filter - Blue Filter and expand B&W on HSL/Color/B&W panel on the right hand side. That’s how Blue Filter is created. Click on B&W Filter - Green Filter and watch changes on the image and in B&W tab.

These are very simple examples as starting point. Continue exploring for example click on Color Creative - Bleach Bypass and expand Basic and HSL/Color/B/W panel. When using Presets use History panel on the left hand side to reset the image to defaults when exploring Presets because some Presets (Vignette, Gradient, Noise Reduction..) are created to work with other and will be applied on top of adjustments already applied to the image. To reset settings you can use and keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + R (Settings > Reset All Settings).

By the way you can download and use for free OnOne Lightroom Presets from here.
