Adding borders to the image in Photoshop – interactive tutorial

Note: I realize that Internet Explorer have problem to display content and have no idea why. Anyway Chrome, Safari and Firefox have no problem with this swf content. Wait a minute browser to load interactive tutorial.

Follow instructions and click with mouse (cursor) on screen where callout is pointing.

In second exercise you will add solid color border around image using Border command from select menu. Follow instructions and click with mouse (cursor) on screen where callout is pointing. Why is better to work in Adobe RGB (1998) instead of sRGB IEC1961-2.1

Image
When one work for the Web there are two options to choose for color profile: Adobe RGB (1998) then to convert to sRGB IEC1961-2.1 or to work directly in sRGB IEC1961-2.1. Better way is to work in Adobe RGB (1998). I have tested more then 20 images for this conclusion.

I tested all my images uniformly applying exact same adjustments: Auto for Curves correction, Increase Contrast 1 in Levels adjustment and +20 for Saturation in Hue/Saturation panel always working with one copy of the image in Adobe RGB (1998) then converting it to sRGB IEC1961-2.1 before saving. With another copy I worked in sRGB IEC1961-2.1. Off course I saved images with exact same settings: as JPEG with high quality 8 from both dialogs: Save As and Save for Web & Devices. Which dialog is better? Save for Web & Devices because gives preview, preview in Browser and more control over file size.

As you can see in comparison below image with which I worked in Adobe RGB (1998) displays more saturated colors an…

Advantage of secondary display in Photoshop Lightroom

Image
One of the most amazing features in Lightroom is Secondary Display. If you are lucky to have two monitors use secondary display for an additional view that is independent of the module and view mode currently active on your main monitor. If you do not have two monitors this feature is still incredible powerful and useful.

Lets start from Library module. Click on any folder or collection to display it on the main window. When using Grid or secondary display choose folder or subfolder that have dotted triangle on the left side to be able to move and reposition photos. When selecting collections, select collection - not collection set (select collection with dotted triangle on the left side).

Select two or more photos in Grid Library View (click on first then Ctrl + click on second, third) then click on Loupe View (E), Compare(C) or Survey View (N) at toolbar (T).

This is great way to compare photos in Library module. Also you can access and apply Quick Develop adjustments, add keyword …

Sharpen, Sharpen More and Sharpen Edges filters actually works in Photoshop CS5

Image
Yes this commands works in Ps CS5 and pretty good in my opinion. There is only one disadvantage: this filters does not have dialogs when applying them, but every sharpening requires Fade and blending mode Luminosity to limit sharpening only to details on image. If we take in account Fade and Blending Options dialogs which comes after sharpening then we have control over intensity of sharpening. This control is through Opacity slider in both Fade and Blending Options dialogs. So if you are using standard filters such Unsharp Mask and High Pass for sharpening, switch to Sharpen and Sharpen More and deal with only Opacity slider without to think Radius and Treshold and what this sliders do inside Photoshop. To not forget and Sharpen Edges command which do exactly what its name says: sharpen only edges.

Sharpen regular layer
When sharpening on regular standard layer after applying Sharpen filter go to Edit > Fade Sharpen and change Mode to Luminosity then drag Opacity slider to the lef…

Free useful droplets for Photoshop

Image
I created 6 droplets for simple conversions to PSD, TIFF and JPEG formats. Downloads from here. Along with format conversion droplets performs and color profile conversion: for PSD and TIFF to Adobe RGB (1998) and for JPEG to sRGB IEC611966-2.1 suitable for Web. If image already have for example Adobe RGB (1998) profile assigned, don’t worry, nothing bad won’t happen to the image. This package contains 2 droplets for conversion to TIFF: one droplet (AdobeRGB_TIFF) will simple convert image to TIFF and second (AdobeRGB_flatten_TIFF) will flatten image and convert to TIFF – when you have image in PSD for example and want to flatten it and convert to TIFF. There are also 3 droplets to convert image in JPEG format, all of them will convert color profile to sRGB and save image as JPEG with 3 different qualities: 6,8 or 10. You can recognize them very easy: if you want to convert and save image in JPEG format with quality 6 use sRGB_jpeg_quality6 droplet.

Converted files will be placed in t…

Change image size and resolution in Photoshop - interactive tutorials

In first exercize you will change only pixel dimensions for purpose posting image on the Web. Resolution is not important when image is for viewing purpose only, so leave resolution as it is and change only pixel dimensions.

Note: I realize that Internet Explorer have problem to display content and have no idea why. Anyway Chrome, Safari and Firefox have no problem with this swf content. Wait a minute browser to load interactive tutorial.

In this exercize you will change resolution of image to 300 pixels per inch for professional printing.
In this exercize you will change resolution and document print size. What if you have increased too much resolution while changing document print size? You will find out in exercize below. One suggestion: do not change resolution if you have only few pixels per inch more, for example: printer need 300 ppi and image have 316 ppi, leave as it is.

B&W conversion in Photoshop, Camera Raw and Lightroom

Image
Converting photo to Black and White is good way to be creative. Advantage of conversion is that B&W photo will always show more shades of gray than color version. Although some cameras have ability to shoot B&W photos most professional Black and White photographers recommends shooting in color then to convert to B&W. B&W photo can be:
High Key where white color is dominant.Low Key where black color is dominant.Shades of Gray where shades of gray are dominant. Bear in mind that when photographers speaks about B&W they usually think about good contrast image.

B&W conversion in Adobe Camera Raw
Lets start from Adobe Camera Raw. Open photo in this Photoshop plugin and good idea is to balance colors and tones before conversion.

Click on HSL/Grayscale tab then in check mark field Convert to Grayscale. Your photo will be converted to B&W with ability to enhance conversion with sliders for Red, Oranges, Yellows and so on. Move sliders and watch on screen what’s happ…

Show Info Overlay (Cropped Dimensions, Megapixels, Capture Date/Time) in Photoshop Lightroom

Image
Sometimes or all the time you want to see your photo dimensions especially after cropping, size occupied on disc, date and time when photo is captured, folder where photo is stored and so on. You can see all information you are interesting in Library Loupe View and Develop module from View > Loupe View (Ctrl or Cmd + I) or have it on the screen all the time. In Lightroom this is called Info Overlay.

Information’s displayed on screen can be controlled from View > View Options (Ctrl or Cmd + J). Name of module + View Options dialog will appear. In Library module this dialog is slightly different from dialog in Develop module and have two tabs: Grid View and Loupe View. Info Overlay can be shown only in Loupe View so click on that tab to control which information’s to see on screen.

First option on the top of dialog is Show Info Overlay. When this option is turned on, Info Overlay will be always shown on screen. On the right side choose from drop down list which Info Overlay to be…

Export multiple Layer Comps to files (PSD, JPEG, TIFF, PNG…)

Image
This is one more very useful script which comes with Photoshop installation. We can use Layer Comps to create several versions of the same creation. Layer Comps to Files can export every layer comp as PSD or TIFF, JPEG and so on. Script is useful to save multiple creations as JPEG’s for example from one dialog and that’s exactly what I will do in video below. Here is post with links to download more useful free Photoshop scripts and plugins.

Note: script will use layer comp name for file name, You can type something in the File Name Prefix text field and to file names will be added sequence numbers: _0000_, _0001_ and so on. Here is solution how to remove sequence numbers and empty spaces from the file name using Adobe Bridge.

Playing actions and turning on/off steps and dialogs visibility (SBS VISUAL TUTORIALS)

Image
Actions can speed up and automate tasks in Photoshop (one example is using Script Events Manager). There are some additional options to play action: steps in action can be turned on/off in other words can be included or excluded from action as they never been recorded. Visibility of dialogs can be also turned on/off so you can see dialog of that step and change recorded settings for example or skip dialog and step in action will be performed without unnecessary dialog.
