Text Wrap in Adobe Illustrator

Illustrator allows you to wrap text around an object or image, don’t you know? To wrap text in Illustrator you must follow this guidelines:
  • Text must be typed in box, it must be paragraph text or draw shape and use Area Type Tool. You are not limited to rectangle, try and other shapes like circle, polygon and see what you can get as final result, it can be very interesting.
  • Text must be in same layer as shape or image (wrap object).
  • Text must be directly under wrap object in the layers hierarchy.

Wrap text around an object

So you have text and shape (or image) just above it in the same layer.
Path must be above text in layers hierarchy in order to wrap text around it

Select image or shape and go to Object > Text Wrap > Make and did is done, you have text wrapped around shape.
With path selected go to Object > Text Wrap > Make
With path selected go to Object > Text Wrap > Make

Offset wrap area

To control offset ensure path (shape, image) is selected and go to Object > Text Wrap > Text Wrap Options.. In Text Wrap Options dialog turn on Preview and type number in Offset text field, number can be and negative. When you are satisfied confirm on OK button.

Remove text wrap

If you want to remove wrap, select object (path, image) and go to Object > Text Wrap > Release.
1. Select path, 2. Click Object menu, 3. Choose Text Wrap > Release to remove text wrap

Conclusion
Illustrator does not offer powerfull wrap options as InDesign but still much better of what have Photoshop to offer. It is still possible to simulate text wrap in Photoshop and if you are interested how-to just let me know..
