Free B&W conversion actions for Photoshop

Actions to convert digital photos into Black & White, some of them use presets from Black White adjustment and some actions are advanced. Along with B&W actions I included and Revert, Duplicate, Match All, Tile actions to make it easier to create several versions and compare converted photos. Actions which allows you to tint photos using Duotone presets are also included as well as actions to tint photo with Sepia tones.

Actions to convert images into Black & White.

Here is video (wait a second browser to load file) and my suggestion how to use those actions and below is short description for each action. I am using Sreencast to host SWF files, they offer hosting up to 2 GB loads in size for free.

APS B&W actions description
High Key converts image into Black & White using Maximum White preset from Black White adjustment layer. This action requires only Background layer, if you have multiple layers flatten image first. Low Key converts image into Black & White using Maximum Black preset from Black White adjustment layer. This action requires only Background layer, if you have multiple layers flatten image first. Neutral Density converts image into Black & White using Neutral Density  preset from Black White adjustment layer. This action requires only Background layer, if you have multiple layers flatten image first. Black/Color adds layer filled with black color above the image (Background layer will be duplicated first) and sets blend mode to Color. This action requires only Background layer, if you have multiple layers flatten image first. Gradient Map converts the image into Black & White using Gradient Map and resets swatches to defaults. This action requires only Background layer, if you have multiple layers flatten image first. Lab/Lightness converts the image into Lab mode, creates B&W from Lightness channel converting that channel into Grayscale mode then converts the image into RGB color space. This action will flatten image if you have multiple layers. Lab/Lightness/Levels converts the image into Lab mode, opens Levels dialog where you can adjust contrast in Lightness channel, creates B&W from Lightness channel converting that channel into Grayscale mode then converts the image into RGB color space. This action will flatten image if you have multiple layers. Lab Equalize converts the image into Lab mode, equalizes tones using Image > Adjustments > Equalize command. Converts the image back to RGB and creates Black White adjustment layer using Default settings. This action will flatten image if you have multiple layers. This action will flatten image if you have multiple layers. Lab Detail converts the image into Lab mode, blends a channel to Lightness using Overlay blend mode then converts resulting channel into Grayscale first then back to RGB color mode. This action will flatten image if you have multiple layers. Ansell Adams converts image into B&W using channel mixer with Monochromatic Red: 150%, Green 130%, Blue -180%. This action requires only Background layer, if you have multiple layers flatten image first. Current Channel converts currently selected channel into Grayscale mode then back to RGB. Select first R, G or B channel from Channels palette then run action. Calculations opens Image > Calculations dialog where you can blend channels using different blend modes. You must have Background layer. Try different channels and different blend modes in Calculations dialog. Ensure New Channel is set for Result. Image will be flattened after confirmation in Calculations dialog. Sepia/Single requires single Background layer. Creates new Hue/Saturation adjustment layer with Colorize checked and following settings: Hue 37, Saturation 25, Lightness 0. Sepia/Multiple requires multiple layers in Layers palette. Selects top most layer then adds Hue/Saturation adjustments layer above it using following settings: Hue 37, Saturation 17, Lightness 0. Duotone/Single requires single Background layer. Converts the image into Grayscale mode then into Duotone. In Duotone Options dialog you can choose preset to apply (and customize it) from Presets drop-down list. After confirmation in Duotone Options dialog image is converted back to RGB. Duotone/Multiple requires multiple layers in Layers palette. Flattens the image first, converts the image into Grayscale mode then into Duotone. In Duotone Options dialog you can choose preset to apply (and customize it) from Presets drop-down list. After confirmation in Duotone Options dialog image is converted back to RGB. Duplicate Image duplicates currently active image (Image > Duplicate). Tile tiles all open images (Window > Arrange > Tile). Match All matches zoom and location of currently active image (Window > Arrange > Match All). Revert reverts image (Image > Revert).
